Which free roadmap template should you actually use?
The right pick depends on three factors:
- Your audience. Engineers want timelines and dates. Execs want goals and themes. Customers want Now-Next-Later. Pick the format your audience needs first, then the tool.
- Your team size. Under 10 people: Google Sheets or Notion. 10-50: Notion or Airtable. 50+: dedicated tools (see best roadmap tools 2026).
- Your existing stack. If your team already lives in Notion, do not force them into Sheets. The roadmap that gets updated weekly beats the perfect roadmap that gets abandoned.
Most product teams under 50 people get more value from a free Google Sheets template than from a $100/user/month dedicated tool. The trade-off (no dependency tracking, manual updates) is rarely worth the price tag.

You should consider upgrading when:
