User Onboarding Templates

Templates for designing user onboarding flows. Welcome sequences, activation checklists, onboarding email flows, and time-to-value optimization.

Onboarding is where product-market fit lives or dies. These templates help you design, measure, and optimize the critical first experience users have with your product. Focus on time-to-value: how quickly can a new user achieve their first meaningful outcome?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is time-to-value in onboarding?+
Time-to-value (TTV) measures how long it takes a new user to experience the core value of your product. For Slack, it is sending the first message. For Dropbox, it is syncing the first file. Reducing TTV is the single highest-leverage onboarding improvement.
How many onboarding steps is too many?+
Most products should get users to their "aha moment" in 3-5 steps. If your onboarding requires more than 7 steps, you are likely asking for too much information upfront. Defer non-essential setup to later sessions.
Should onboarding be self-serve or guided?+
For products under $100/month, self-serve onboarding should be the default. For enterprise products ($1,000+/month), pair self-serve with a guided setup call. The templates here cover both approaches.
