Frequently Asked Questions

How many onboarding steps is too many?+
Five steps or fewer for the critical path to activation. Users who need more than 5 actions to experience core value will not complete the flow in one session. Non-critical steps (integrations, settings, teammate invites) should be available but not required. The [activation rate metric](/metrics/activation-rate) can help you benchmark completion rates by step count.
Should onboarding include a product tour?+
Short, contextual tooltips (3-5 steps) outperform long product tours. Full product tours have completion rates below 25%. Instead, show guidance at the moment of need: when the user is about to take an action, not when they first log in. The [PLG Handbook](/plg-guide) covers tooltip vs. tour design patterns.
How do I handle users who sign up but never log in?+
This is your email sequence's job. Send the first nudge within 24 hours. Include a direct link to the exact screen where they left off, not a generic login link. If they do not return after 3 emails, try a different angle: a video walkthrough, a case study, or an offer for a live demo.
When should I add interactive onboarding (sample data, templates)?+
When your activation rate is below 30%. Sample data and templates reduce the "blank canvas" problem where users do not know what to do first. Offer 2-3 templates at the "Create first project" step. Users who start from a template activate at 2x the rate of users who start from scratch.
How do I measure onboarding effectiveness over time?+
Track activation rate (% of signups reaching the milestone within 7 days) as your primary metric. Break it by signup cohort (weekly) to detect regression. Secondary metrics: time-to-activate, steps completed, and Day 7 retention of activated vs. non-activated users. ---
