Frequently Asked Questions

When should a PLG company add product-led sales?+
When you see three signals: (1) organic multi-seat adoption in free accounts, (2) self-serve conversion plateaus despite growing signups, and (3) you identify accounts where the self-serve price point understates the product's value. Most PLG companies add PLS between $1M and $10M ARR. The [Product-Led Growth Handbook](/plg-guide) covers the PLG-to-PLS transition in detail.
How many PQL signals should the scoring model include?+
Start with 5-8 signals. More than 10 introduces noise and makes the model hard to interpret. Begin with the signals you are most confident about (usage limits, multi-user adoption, sustained engagement) and add refinements quarterly based on which PQLs actually convert. The [product-led growth glossary entry](/glossary/prioritization) covers PQL best practices.
Should sales reps have access to individual user activity?+
They need account-level context (number of active users, features used, usage trends) but should not cold-email individual users within an account. The first outreach should go to the admin or the most senior user, referencing the team's usage patterns. Contacting multiple individual users feels invasive and undermines trust.
How do I prevent PLS from annoying self-serve users?+
Three rules: (1) Only engage accounts above your PQL threshold. (2) Keep outreach to 4-5 touches over 14 days, then stop. (3) If a PQL explicitly declines, do not re-engage for 90 days unless their usage pattern changes significantly (new signal crosses threshold). Respect is more important than quota.
What tools do I need for PLS?+
At minimum: product analytics (Amplitude, Mixpanel, or PostHog), a CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce), and a way to connect them (reverse ETL tool like Census, Hightouch, or a custom integration). PQL scoring can start in a spreadsheet. Automate when you have 50+ PQLs per month. ---
