Why API Products Need Different Metrics
Standard SaaS metrics miss what matters for API products. Monthly active users does not tell you much when one "user" is a developer whose integration handles 10 million API calls per month. Page views are irrelevant when your product has no pages.
API products have a unique funnel. A developer discovers your API, reads the docs, gets API keys, makes a first call, builds an integration, and then scales usage over time. Each stage has different failure modes and different metrics.
The goal is the same as any product: find out where developers get stuck, where they drop off, and where they find enough value to keep going. The measurements just look different.
Onboarding Metrics
These measure how quickly new developers go from "interested" to "integrated."
Time to First Call (TTFC)
The single most diagnostic metric for API products. TTFC measures the elapsed time from account creation to the first successful API call.
Why it matters: Every minute of TTFC is a minute where a developer might give up. Twilio's obsession with reducing TTFC (they got it under 5 minutes) was a key growth driver. If your TTFC is measured in days, you have a problem.
How to measure it: Timestamp account creation. Timestamp the first API response with a 2xx status code. Subtract. Report the median and the 90th percentile. The median tells you the typical experience. The P90 tells you how bad it gets for struggling developers.

What drives TTFC up: Complex authentication flows, slow API key provisioning, poor quickstart documentation, missing code examples, required webhook configuration before first call.
Documentation Completion Rate
Percentage of developers who view the quickstart guide and then make a successful API call within 24 hours. Low completion rates point to documentation gaps.
Track which documentation pages developers visit before their first successful call versus before they abandon. The difference reveals where your docs fail.
Activation Rate
Percentage of developers who sign up and reach a meaningful integration milestone. Define "activated" based on your product. For a payments API, it might be processing the first real transaction. For a messaging API, it might be sending 100 messages.

Adoption and Usage Metrics
These measure how deeply developers integrate with your API after onboarding.
API Call Volume
Total calls per day, week, and month. Segment by endpoint, customer, and API version.
Raw volume matters less than the trend. Growing call volume from existing integrations signals that developers are building more features on your API. Flat or declining volume from an active customer signals they are hitting limits or finding alternatives.
Endpoint Coverage
How many of your available endpoints each developer actually uses. If you offer 40 endpoints and the median developer uses 4, either 36 endpoints are not valuable or developers do not know they exist.
Low endpoint coverage is a roadmap signal. Before building new endpoints, make sure developers are finding and using the ones you have. Sometimes better documentation or a "did you know?" email campaign drives more adoption than new features.
Integration Depth Score
A composite metric combining call volume, endpoint coverage, and feature usage. Weight each factor based on your business model. A developer using 3 endpoints at high volume is more integrated than one using 15 endpoints at trivial volume.
Use integration depth to segment your developer base into tiers: experimenting, building, scaling. Each tier needs different support and communication. Map these tiers against your broader product strategy to ensure your API roadmap serves the segments that drive the most value.
Reliability Metrics
Developers will forgive a missing feature. They will not forgive unreliability.
Error Rate
Percentage of API calls that return 4xx or 5xx status codes. Split these carefully:
- Client errors (4xx) are usually the developer's fault, but they are still your problem. High 400 rates on a specific endpoint mean your API design is confusing or your documentation is wrong.
- Server errors (5xx) are always your fault. Target: under 0.1% of all calls.
- Timeout rate deserves its own line. Calls that never complete are worse than calls that fail fast.
Track error rates per endpoint, not just globally. A 0.5% global error rate might hide a 15% error rate on your most important endpoint.
Latency (P50 / P95 / P99)
Median latency tells you the typical experience. P95 tells you how it feels on a bad day. P99 tells you how it feels for your biggest customers (who hit edge cases most often).
Targets vary by API type:
- Data retrieval APIs: P50 under 100ms, P99 under 500ms
- Processing APIs (image manipulation, ML inference): P50 under 1s, P99 under 5s
- Webhook delivery: Within 30 seconds of triggering event
Report latency from the developer's perspective, not your server's perspective. Include network time. If your server responds in 50ms but the developer sees 300ms because of DNS resolution and TLS handshakes, 300ms is the real number.
Uptime
Target 99.95% or higher for production APIs. That is roughly 4.5 hours of downtime per year. Publish your uptime on a status page. Developers check status pages before choosing an API provider, and they check them again every time something breaks.

Revenue per Developer
Total API revenue divided by active developer count. Track this monthly and watch the trend. Healthy API businesses see revenue per developer increase over time as integrations deepen and usage scales.
If revenue per developer is flat, your pricing model might not scale with value. If it is declining, you are adding free-tier developers faster than paid developers are growing.
Net Revenue Retention (NRR)
Revenue from existing API customers this year versus last year, accounting for upgrades, downgrades, and churn. NRR above 120% means your existing developers are growing their usage faster than others are leaving.
NRR is the best single metric for API product-market fit. If developers who integrate with your API naturally use more of it over time, you are building something valuable.
Developer Churn Rate
Percentage of developers who stop making API calls in a given period. Define "churned" as zero API calls for 30 consecutive days (adjust based on your typical usage patterns).
Segment churn by integration depth. Losing developers who never made it past the first call is an onboarding problem. Losing deeply integrated developers is a product or reliability problem. The fix is different for each.
Developer Satisfaction
Quantitative metrics tell you what is happening. Satisfaction metrics tell you why.
Developer Experience Score (DXS)
A quarterly survey covering four dimensions:
- Documentation quality (1-10): Can developers find what they need?
- API reliability (1-10): Do they trust your API to work?
- Support responsiveness (1-10): When they need help, do they get it?
- Ease of integration (1-10): How much effort does integration require?
Average the four scores. Benchmark against yourself quarter over quarter. A DXS above 40 (out of 40) is strong. Below 25 needs immediate attention.
Support Ticket Ratio
Support tickets per 100 active developers per month. High ratios signal documentation gaps, confusing error messages, or reliability issues. Track which endpoints and topics generate the most tickets. That is your improvement backlog.

Building Your API Analytics Dashboard
Start with five charts. You can add more later, but these give you the core picture.
- TTFC trend (weekly median and P90, line chart). Are you getting faster or slower at onboarding developers?
- Daily API call volume (stacked area by top 10 endpoints). Where is usage growing?
- Error rate by endpoint (heatmap, daily). Which endpoints are causing pain?
- Developer funnel (weekly cohort). Signup > first call > activation > scaling. Where do developers drop off?
- NRR and churn (monthly). Is the business healthy?
Review this dashboard weekly with your engineering lead. Monthly, present it to leadership with a narrative: here is what changed, here is why, here is what we are doing about it.
Using Metrics for Roadmap Decisions
