Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to rank for a competitive keyword?+
For a new domain (DA < 20) targeting a keyword with difficulty 40-60, expect 4-8 months to reach page 1. For established domains (DA 40+), 2-4 months is typical. Very competitive keywords (difficulty 70+) may take 12+ months regardless of domain authority. Focus on lower-difficulty long-tail keywords while building authority for your head terms. The [Product Analytics Handbook](/analytics-guide) covers how to measure organic growth trajectory over time.
How do I choose between targeting a high-volume keyword and a low-difficulty keyword?+
At early stages (DA < 30), prioritize low-difficulty keywords with clear commercial intent. A keyword with 200 monthly searches and difficulty 15 will rank faster and convert better than a keyword with 5,000 searches and difficulty 70 that you will never reach page 1 for. As your domain authority grows, gradually target higher-difficulty keywords.
How many keywords should I target per page?+
One primary keyword and 3-5 secondary keywords per page. All secondary keywords should be semantically related to the primary keyword. Do not try to rank a single page for unrelated keywords. If you have distinct search intents, create separate pages. Google is sophisticated enough to rank one page for related keyword clusters, but not for topically disconnected terms.
How important are backlinks compared to content quality?+
Both matter, but their relative importance depends on your competitive environment. For low-difficulty keywords (under 30), excellent content with strong on-page SEO can rank without backlinks. For medium-difficulty keywords (30-60), you need both great content and 10-20 referring domains. For high-difficulty keywords (60+), backlinks from authoritative sites are usually the differentiating factor between page 1 and page 3.
Should I create separate pages for every keyword variation?+
Only if the search intent is different. "Product analytics tool" and "product analytics software" have the same intent and should be served by one page. "Product analytics vs web analytics" has a different intent (comparison) and deserves its own page. Check the SERP overlap: if the same pages rank for both keywords, they share intent and need one page. ---
