Kano Model: What It Does

The Kano Model, developed by Professor Noriaki Kano in 1984, categorizes features based on their relationship to customer satisfaction. Each feature falls into one of five categories:

Step 4: RICE for ranking. Apply RICE scoring to Performance and Attractive features. This produces the execution order within each category.

Common Mistakes

Running RICE without Kano context. A feature can score high on RICE (high reach, high estimated impact) but fall into Kano's Indifferent category. This happens when teams project their own assumptions about impact rather than validating with customers.

Treating Kano categories as permanent. Features migrate between categories over time. What was an Attractive delighter two years ago may now be a Must-Be expectation. Re-run Kano analysis annually or when competitive dynamics shift.
