Value vs Effort suits smaller teams (3-7 people) that need to move fast. The 2x2 matrix is simple enough to run in a 30-minute meeting and produces clear quadrants. Its weakness is that it treats "value" as a single dimension, which hides disagreements about what kind of value matters.
ICE appeals to growth teams running experiments. Confidence is weighted more heavily, which pushes teams toward smaller, testable bets. It works poorly for infrastructure work where confidence is inherently low but the work is still necessary.
MoSCoW remains popular for deadline-driven projects like launches and migrations. It answers "what can we cut?" better than it answers "what should we build next?" The binary nature of Must/Should/Could/Won't forces clarity when scope needs trimming.
Kano model shows up most in B2C companies running customer research programs. It requires actual user data, which makes it slower but more grounded. Teams that invest in the research get better results. Teams that skip the research and guess the categories get worse results than they would with a simpler framework.

The Rise of Hybrid Approaches
The 7% using custom or hybrid frameworks is the fastest-growing segment, up from 3% in 2024. Most hybrids follow a similar pattern: RICE scoring for tactical feature prioritization layered with a strategic alignment score that maps to quarterly objectives.
One common approach: score items with RICE, then multiply by a 1-3x "strategic alignment" multiplier. Items that directly support the current quarter's top objective get 3x. Items that support secondary objectives get 2x. Everything else gets 1x. This prevents the backlog from filling with high-RICE-score features that do not move the needle on what the company actually needs right now.
AI-Assisted Prioritization
A new pattern emerging in 2026: 23% of teams now use AI to generate initial RICE estimates before human review. Product teams feed feature descriptions, historical data, and customer feedback into LLMs to get starting scores for Reach and Impact.
The workflow typically looks like this: AI proposes initial scores, the PM reviews and adjusts, then the team debates during prioritization meetings. Early adopters report that AI-generated starting points cut scoring time by roughly 40%, but accuracy varies widely. Reach estimates tend to be reasonable when historical usage data is available. Pick the framework that matches your team size and decision cadence. Use it consistently for at least two quarters before judging whether it works. And when you override the scores after debate, write down why. That rationale is more valuable than the number it replaced.
