Why Track Sprint Velocity
Sprint velocity is the most reliable predictor of future team output. By tracking completed story points over multiple sprints, you build a data-driven baseline that replaces guesswork with evidence. Use 3-5 sprints of data for a reliable average.
Velocity pairs well with roadmap planning since it lets you convert a backlog of story points into a real timeline. For prioritizing what goes into each sprint, try the RICE calculator to rank features by impact.
Tips for Accurate Velocity
Keep sprint lengths consistent. Don't count unfinished stories. Exclude spikes and research tasks from velocity calculations. When team composition changes, reset your baseline after 2-3 sprints.
