Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right criteria for my scoring model?+
Start with your quarterly goals and work backward. If the goal is revenue growth, include revenue impact and customer demand. If the goal is platform reliability, include technical debt reduction and incident prevention. Always include at least one effort or cost criterion to balance against value criteria.
What happens if two features get the same weighted score?+
Add a tiebreaker criterion (for example, "which one is easier to reverse if it fails") or use stack ranking to force a choice between the tied features. In practice, ties are rare when using 5 or more criteria with differentiated weights.
How often should I update the criteria and weights?+
Review criteria and weights at the start of each quarter when strategic priorities may have shifted. The criteria themselves rarely change (revenue impact and customer demand are always relevant), but the weights should reflect your current emphasis.
Is weighted scoring better than RICE?+
Neither is inherently better. [RICE](/frameworks/rice-framework) is faster to set up because the criteria are predefined. Weighted scoring is more flexible because you define the criteria yourself. Use RICE when the standard four dimensions capture your priorities. Use weighted scoring when you need to factor in dimensions like compliance, partner commitments, or brand impact that RICE does not cover.
Can I combine weighted scoring with other prioritization methods?+
Yes. A common pattern is to use weighted scoring for quarterly planning (strategic level) and a faster method like the value-effort matrix or ICE scoring for sprint-level decisions. The weighted model provides the strategic ranking. Sprint-level methods handle the tactical sequencing within that ranking.
