Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a PRD be?+
Most PRDs land between 3-8 pages depending on the scope of the initiative. A small feature might need 2 pages. A platform initiative with multiple workstreams might need 10. The right length is whatever it takes to remove ambiguity for the people building it. If your PRD is over 10 pages, consider splitting the initiative into smaller projects with their own documents.
What is the difference between a PRD and a product brief?+
A product brief is a one-page pitch that answers "should we build this?" It is used to get alignment and a go/no-go decision before investing in detailed planning. A PRD answers "how should we build this?" and includes user stories, requirements, and technical details. The brief comes first; the PRD comes after the team decides to move forward. Who should review the PRD?+
At minimum: the engineering lead, a designer, and the key business stakeholder. For larger initiatives, include QA, data/analytics, and anyone who will be responsible for launching, supporting, or selling the feature. Keep the review group small enough to make decisions quickly.
Should I include technical implementation details?+
Include enough for the engineering team to estimate scope and flag architectural concerns. You do not need to specify database schemas or API contracts in the PRD itself. The Technical Considerations section should cover approach, dependencies, and risks. The engineering team will produce their own technical design document for implementation details.
How often should I update the PRD?+
Update it whenever a meaningful decision changes the scope, requirements, or success metrics. At minimum, review it at the start of each sprint that touches the initiative. Mark the Status field (Draft, In Review, Approved, Shipped) so readers know whether the document reflects current plans or historical intent. ---
