Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I do a self-assessment?+
Every 6 months is the right cadence. More frequently and you will not see meaningful score changes. Less frequently and you risk spending too long working on the wrong gaps. Align assessments with your company's performance review cycle if possible, so the work feeds directly into your review prep.
What if my self-assessment and 360 feedback disagree?+
Take the 360 feedback seriously, especially when others rate you lower than you rate yourself. Self-assessments tend to overweight intentions ("I know how to do this") while 360 feedback measures observed behavior ("I have seen you do this"). When in doubt, trust the 360 for stakeholder-facing skills like communication and leadership, and trust your self-assessment for technical skills that others may not observe.
Should I share my assessment with my manager?+
Yes, selectively. Sharing your development plan (not raw scores) with your manager shows self-awareness and initiative. Frame it as: "I have identified these growth areas and here is my plan to improve. I would appreciate your support with [specific request]." This also sets up future conversations about the resources or projects that could help you develop.
What score should I target on each competency?+
Do not aim for 5s across the board. That is unrealistic and unnecessary. A 4.0+ overall average with no scores below 3.0 is excellent for a Senior PM. For Director+ roles, aim for 4.5+ in Strategy, Stakeholders, and Leadership with 3.5+ across everything else. Specialization is valuable. A Growth PM who scores 5.0 in Data and 3.0 in Technical Acumen is better positioned than one who scores 3.5 in both.
