Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good D1 retention rate for a mobile game?+
Industry benchmarks for D1 retention: hyper-casual 35-45%, casual 30-40%, mid-core 25-35%, hardcore 20-30%. These numbers have been relatively stable over the past 5 years. If your D1 is below the bottom of your genre range, the first session experience needs redesign. If it is above average but D7 drops sharply, the problem is in the early engagement loop, not the first session.
How do I calculate retention rate?+
D-N retention = (players who return on day N) / (players who installed on day 0). This is calendar-day retention, the most common method. Rolling retention (players who return on day N *or later*) gives higher numbers and is useful for understanding long-term engagement, but calendar-day retention is the industry standard for benchmarking.
Should I use push notifications to drive retention?+
Yes, but with discipline. Push notifications are the highest-impact re-engagement channel for mobile games. The rules: always deliver tangible value (rewards, content, social events), cap frequency at 1-2 per day, personalize based on player behavior, and let players control notification preferences. A single annoying push can trigger an uninstall.
What is the relationship between retention and LTV?+
Retention is the primary driver of LTV. A player who retains for 30 days has 10x more opportunities to spend or view ads than a player who churns on Day 3. As a rough model: LTV = ARPDAU x average player lifetime in days. Improving D30 retention from 5% to 10% roughly doubles the average player lifetime and therefore roughly doubles LTV.
How often should I review retention metrics?+
Daily for D1, weekly for D7, and monthly for D30 and beyond. Set up automated alerts for significant drops (e.g., D1 retention falls below 30%). After every app update, track retention for the new install cohort separately to catch regressions. Major content updates and live ops events should each have their own cohort analysis. ---
