Frequently Asked Questions

How many outcomes should I include in the survey?+
50-100 outcomes is typical for a thorough ODI study. Fewer than 30 risks missing important outcomes. More than 150 creates survey fatigue. For the survey itself, each respondent should rate 50-80 outcomes (split longer lists across respondent groups).
How is ODI different from traditional customer interviews?+
Traditional interviews ask "what do you want?" and get feature requests. ODI asks "what are you trying to accomplish?" and gets desired outcomes. The shift from solutions to outcomes is fundamental. It means your innovation is not limited by what customers can imagine.
Can I use ODI for existing features, not just new products?+
Absolutely. Run an ODI study on the job your existing product serves. You will discover which outcomes your product satisfies well (your differentiators) and which it underserves (your roadmap priorities). This is one of the most practical applications of ODI.
What sample size do I need for the survey?+
50 respondents is the minimum for directional data. 100+ provides statistical confidence. For segmented analysis (comparing enterprise vs. SMB, for example), you need 50+ per segment. Strategyn recommends 180+ for rigorous studies. ---
