Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Lean Canvas different from a business plan?+
A business plan is 20-40 pages, takes weeks to write, and is outdated by the time you finish. The Lean Canvas is one page, takes 20 minutes, and is designed to be revised frequently. Business plans are for bank loans and MBA programs. Lean Canvases are for startups that need to validate assumptions fast.
How often should I update my Lean Canvas?+
Monthly at minimum, or whenever you learn something that changes a core assumption. If you run 10 customer interviews and discover your Problem #1 is actually Problem #3, update immediately. The canvas should reflect your current understanding, not your original hypothesis. Track versions so you can see how your model has evolved.
What if I cannot fill in the Unfair Advantage section?+
That is common for early-stage companies. Write "None yet" and describe what you are building toward. Most unfair advantages (proprietary data, network effects, brand, community) take 12-24 months to develop. The section is a reminder to think about [defensibility](/glossary/competitive-moat), not a requirement to have it on day one.
Should I create one canvas per product or per customer segment?+
One per customer segment, especially if the segments have different problems, channels, or revenue models. A B2B and B2C version of the same product should be two separate canvases because almost everything differs. If two segments share the same Problem, Solution, and Channels, you can combine them.
How does the Lean Canvas connect to a PRD?+
The Lean Canvas captures the "what and why" at a business model level. The [PRD Template](/templates/prd-template) captures the "what and how" at a product level. Start with the Lean Canvas to validate the business model, then write a PRD when you are ready to build. The Solution section of the Lean Canvas becomes the starting point for your PRD. ---
