Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the sprint planning template?+
The [sprint planning template](/templates/sprint-planning-template) structures the planning meeting (steps, timings, facilitation). This iteration plan template is the output document: the plan itself. Use the meeting template to run planning, then capture the results in this template. Some teams combine them into a single artifact.
Should we update this plan mid-iteration?+
Update the status column as items progress. Do not change the committed items or the goal mid-iteration unless an emergency forces a scope change. If scope changes, document the change and the reason. Frequent mid-iteration scope changes signal a problem with planning or stakeholder alignment.
What if the team cannot fill the iteration with backlog items?+
If the [backlog](/glossary/backlog) does not have enough ready items to fill the iteration, this is a refinement problem, not a planning problem. Schedule a [backlog grooming session](/templates/backlog-grooming-template) to refine and estimate upcoming items. In the short term, allocate the extra capacity to tech debt or spikes.
How do we handle items that span multiple iterations?+
Split them. If a [user story](/glossary/user-story) cannot be completed in one iteration, it is too large. Use vertical slicing to deliver a thin but complete slice of functionality in each iteration. The [epic breakdown template](/templates) covers techniques for decomposing large initiatives.
