Frequently Asked Questions
Is designing for habits manipulative?+
It depends on what the habit delivers. Designing a habit around a product that genuinely helps users do their job better is good product design. Designing a habit around endless scrolling that wastes time and creates anxiety is manipulation. The test: if a user reflected on their habit, would they be glad they have it? If yes, the habit design is ethical. If no, reconsider.
What if my product is used weekly, not daily?+
Weekly habits are real but take longer to form (12-16 weeks vs. 6-10 for daily). Adjust your timeline, reduce trigger frequency, and make each weekly session more rewarding. Analytics dashboards, weekly reports, and planning tools are natural weekly habits. The [Product Analytics Handbook](/analytics-guide) covers weekly usage patterns for analytics products.
How do I measure whether a habit has formed?+
Track unprompted sessions (sessions not preceded by a notification or email within 2 hours). When 50%+ of a user's sessions are unprompted, the habit is forming. When that sustains for 4+ consecutive weeks, the habit is established. Also track the DAU/MAU ratio. Products with strong habits have 25-50% DAU/MAU.
Can I replace an existing habit with my product?+
Yes, but it is harder than forming a new habit. To replace an existing habit, your product must use the same cue and deliver a better reward in less time. Slack replaced internal email for many teams because the cue (need to communicate with a colleague) was the same, but the reward (instant response) was faster. Do not try to create a new cue. Attach to an existing one.
What about products that should NOT be habitual?+
Some products are better as utilities: tax software, insurance applications, moving services. For these, design for task completion and satisfaction rather than habits. The [churn rate glossary entry](/glossary/churn-rate) discusses expected retention patterns for low-frequency products. ---
