Frequently Asked Questions

How is a GDD different from a PRD?+
A [PRD](/templates/prd-template) defines requirements for a software feature: user stories, acceptance criteria, technical specs. A GDD focuses on the creative and mechanical design of a game: what makes it fun, how progression works, how the economy balances. If you are building a game, you need both. The GDD captures design intent; the PRD captures engineering requirements for specific features within the game.
How long should a GDD be?+
For a mobile game or indie title, 10-20 pages is typical. For a large-scale multiplayer game, the GDD might run 50+ pages. The right length depends on team size and communication style. Small teams (under 10) can get away with a shorter document supplemented by daily conversations. Larger teams need more written detail to stay aligned.
Should the GDD include monetization details?+
Yes. Monetization is a design decision, not a business afterthought. The economy, progression pacing, and purchase triggers are all interconnected. Designing them separately leads to pay-to-win mechanics or revenue models that undermine the core experience. Include monetization in the GDD and review it alongside the gameplay design.
Who owns the GDD?+
The product manager or game designer owns the document, but every discipline contributes. Art, engineering, audio, QA, and marketing all need sections that speak to their concerns. The PM's job is to keep the document cohesive and up to date as the team's understanding evolves.
When should I start writing the GDD?+
Start during the concept phase, after you have a playable prototype or paper prototype of the core loop. Writing a full GDD before you have validated the core mechanic is premature. Write the Game Overview and Core Loop sections first, validate with playtesting, then expand the document as you move into pre-production. ---
