ClickUp gives you sprints, custom fields, and automations. What it does not give you is a structured way to decide which items deserve a spot in the next sprint. That decision usually happens in a planning meeting where the loudest voice wins.

The Sprint Planning Problem
Most ClickUp teams run sprint planning like this: pull up the backlog, discuss items one by one, estimate effort, and fill the sprint until capacity runs out. The issue is that "discuss items" often means "the PM advocates for features, the tech lead advocates for tech debt, and nobody has data."
Adding a scoring step before the planning meeting changes the dynamic. Instead of debating what feels important, you debate the scores. That is a better conversation.
Choosing the Right Scoring Framework
Different frameworks suit different team structures.

Setting Up Scoring in ClickUp
ClickUp's custom fields make scoring integration straightforward.
Step 1: Add custom fields. In your ClickUp Space settings, add these custom number fields: "Priority Score" (the final calculated score), and optionally the individual dimension fields (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort for RICE).
Step 2: Create a scoring view. Add a Table view filtered to "Backlog" status. Sort by Priority Score descending. This becomes your sprint candidate list.
Step 3: Score before planning. The PM scores the top 20-30 backlog items before the sprint planning meeting. Use the appropriate IdeaPlan calculator, then paste scores into ClickUp custom fields.
Step 4: Plan from the ranked list. In sprint planning, start from the top of the scored list. Discuss effort estimates and pull items into the sprint until capacity is full. The scores give you a starting order. The team discussion ensures you are not blindly following a formula.
ClickUp-Specific Workflow Tips
Use ClickUp Automations for visibility. Create an automation that posts to your Slack channel when an item's Priority Score is updated. This keeps the team aware of scoring changes without checking ClickUp.
Sprint capacity tracking. ClickUp shows sprint points or time estimates. Map your scoring framework's Effort dimension to ClickUp's time estimates so the numbers stay consistent.
Multiple lists, one scoring system. If your ClickUp workspace has separate lists for features, bugs, and tech debt, score all sprint candidates using the same framework. This lets you compare a feature request against a tech debt item objectively.
Use ClickUp Goals for alignment. Link sprint items to ClickUp Goals that map to your quarterly objectives. When reviewing scores, check that high-scoring items actually serve your current goals. A high-RICE feature that does not align with this quarter's goals should wait.
Handling Tech Debt in Sprint Scoring
Tech debt often scores poorly in customer-facing frameworks like RICE because the Reach is internal. Adjust for this.
Option A: Reserve capacity. Allocate 20% of each sprint to tech debt regardless of scores. Score only the remaining 80% capacity using RICE or ICE.
Option B: Add a "Technical Risk" dimension. Use the weighted scoring tool to add a Technical Risk dimension alongside the standard scoring criteria. This gives tech debt a fair shot in the scoring process.
