Why we wrote the AI PM Handbook

Most AI product management content falls into two camps. Either it's machine-learning theory written for engineers, or it's vague marketing copy about "leveraging AI" without anything actionable. Neither is useful for the PM trying to ship a real AI feature next quarter.

The AI Product Manager Handbook is the missing middle. It assumes you're a working product manager with no formal ML background. Each chapter teaches one thing you can apply to a real product decision: how to write a spec for an AI feature, how to evaluate output quality without a data science team, how to price usage-based AI features, how to handle the failure modes you can't fully predict.

What makes this different from other AI PM guides

Three things:

  • Operational, not theoretical. Every chapter ends with a checklist, decision framework, or template you can use this week. No "here are the 7 types of neural networks."
  • Honest about failure modes. AI products fail differently than traditional software. The handbook is explicit about hallucinations, eval drift, model deprecations, and the kind of post-launch surprises that don't exist in deterministic software.
  • Updated for 2026. Includes coverage of agentic AI patterns, multi-model stacks, the shift from per-seat to usage-based pricing, and the operational realities of AI features in production at scale.

Who this handbook is for

Product managers building AI features or AI-first products. The handbook also gets used by engineering managers shipping AI to internal teams, designers working on AI UX, and founders evaluating whether to build AI into their product. If you're an academic ML researcher, this is too applied. For everyone else, it's the practical reference.

How to use the handbook

The 12 chapters are self-contained. Read linearly if you're new to AI product management. Jump to the chapter you need if you have a specific problem (writing a spec, picking a pricing model, handling a model deprecation).

Yes. The full 12-chapter PDF is free to download with no email gate, no trial period, and no paid plan required. The same content is also readable online.

What does the AI Product Manager Handbook cover?

Twelve chapters covering the AI product landscape, vocabulary every PM must know, when to use AI (and when not to), the AI product lifecycle, writing AI product specs, evaluating AI quality, AI UX design, AI ethics, AI product strategy, AI product economics, monitoring and operating AI products, and scaling AI across the organization.

Who is the AI PM Handbook for?

Product managers building AI features or AI-first products. The handbook assumes basic PM experience but no machine learning background. Engineers, designers, and founders working on AI products will also find it useful.

How long is the AI Product Manager Handbook?

The PDF runs 60 minutes of reading across 12 chapters. Each chapter is self-contained, so you can read it linearly or jump to the chapter you need.

Is the handbook updated for 2026?

Yes. The handbook is updated for 2026 with current frameworks for AI evaluation, agentic product design, AI economics under usage-based pricing, and post-launch monitoring practices.
