How many trends should a product team track?+
Track 5-8 trends at any given time. Fewer than 5 risks tunnel vision. More than 10 means you are scanning without focusing. Prioritize ruthlessly.
How is trend analysis different from competitive analysis?+
Competitive analysis looks at what competitors are doing now. Trend analysis looks at where the market is heading. Both inform strategy, but trend analysis is forward-looking and not limited to your current competitors.
Who should own trend analysis on a product team?+
The product leader or head of strategy should own the process and cadence. Individual PMs should contribute signals from their domains. Quarterly review meetings should include engineering and design leads, since technical feasibility and user experience considerations shape which trends are actionable.
How do I present trend findings to executives?+
Lead with the "so what." Executives do not want a research report. They want to know which trends create opportunities or threats, and what you recommend doing about it.
