Frequently Asked Questions
How is a launch brief different from a go-to-market plan?+
A launch brief is a one-page alignment document that ensures everyone knows the what, who, when, why, and how of a specific launch. A [Go-to-Market Plan](/templates/go-to-market-plan-template) is a detailed strategy document that covers messaging frameworks, competitive positioning, channel strategy, content plans, and multi-week execution timelines. P0 launches need both: the brief for cross-functional alignment and the GTM plan for marketing execution. P1 and P2 launches typically only need the brief.
Who should review the launch brief?+
Every person listed as an owner in the brief. At minimum: the PM, engineering lead, marketing lead, CS/support lead, and any sales stakeholder. For P0 launches, include the VP of Product or equivalent. Keep the review meeting to 15 minutes. Walk through each section, confirm dates and owners, and surface any blockers. If there are no blockers, the meeting can be shorter.
How far in advance should the brief be completed?+
For P0 launches, 4+ weeks before launch. For P1, 2-3 weeks. For P2, 1 week. These lead times give cross-functional teams enough time to prepare their deliverables (support docs, email copy, sales materials). If you are completing the brief less than a week before a P0 or P1 launch, something has gone wrong in the planning process.
What if the launch date slips?+
Update the brief immediately with the new date and send a short notification to all stakeholders. Do not let people operate on stale dates. If the date slips more than once, schedule a 15-minute replanning meeting to reset expectations and address the root cause of the delay.
Should I include pricing in the launch brief?+
Only if the launch involves a pricing change or if the feature is tied to a specific plan tier. Include which plans get access and whether there is any pricing impact. For the shared dashboards example, the brief notes that the feature is limited to Business and Enterprise plans. If you are launching a pricing restructure, that is a P0 launch that needs its own dedicated pricing brief in addition to the standard launch brief. ---
