Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the Eisenhower Matrix?+
The [Eisenhower Matrix](/frameworks/eisenhower-matrix) uses Urgency and Importance as axes. It was designed for personal task management. The Value vs Effort matrix adapts the same 2x2 structure for product decisions, where the relevant dimensions are user/business value and engineering cost. The mechanics are identical. The axes are different.
What if every feature seems like High Value?+
That means your value criteria are too loose. Tighten them by anchoring to a specific metric or OKR. "High Value" should mean "directly moves our Q2 goal" or "addresses a top-3 churn reason." If you define value as "would be nice for users," everything qualifies and the matrix is useless.
Should I use this instead of RICE?+
They serve different purposes. The 2x2 matrix is faster and more visual. Use it for quick triage, workshops, and alignment conversations. RICE is more precise and data-driven. Use it when you need defensible scores for stakeholder buy-in or when features are closely matched. Many teams use the matrix first to eliminate Money Pit items, then RICE-score the remaining candidates with the [RICE Calculator](/tools/rice-calculator).
How do I handle features that sit on the boundary between quadrants?+
Discuss them for 30 seconds with the team. If you cannot decide, default to the lower-priority quadrant. A feature on the boundary between Quick Win and Big Bet is probably a Big Bet (the effort is higher than it looks). A feature between Fill-in and Quick Win is worth doing, just not first.
Can I use more than two axes?+
You can, but you lose the visual simplicity that makes the 2x2 useful. If you need 3+ criteria, switch to [Weighted Scoring](/tools/weighted-scoring) or [RICE](/tools/rice-calculator). The strength of the matrix is speed and clarity. Adding axes turns it into a spreadsheet. ---
