Frequently Asked Questions
How many case studies should my portfolio include?+
Three to five. Fewer than three looks thin. More than five overwhelms the reader and suggests you cannot prioritize. Choose projects that collectively demonstrate breadth across discovery, strategy, execution, and measurement.
What if I signed an NDA and cannot share details?+
Anonymize aggressively. Replace the company name with a description ("a Series B fintech startup"). Replace exact revenue numbers with percentages. Redact user data and internal tool names. Most NDAs restrict sharing proprietary information, not the fact that you solved a problem and measured the result. When in doubt, ask your former employer.
Should I include failed projects?+
Yes, one if possible. A failed project where you explain what you learned demonstrates maturity that three success stories cannot. Frame it as: "Here is what we tried, here is what happened, here is what I learned, and here is what I would do differently." Hiring managers trust PMs who can discuss failure honestly.
Do I need a portfolio if I have 10+ years of PM experience?+
A portfolio helps at every level, but the format shifts. Junior and mid-level PMs need to prove they can do the work. Senior and Director+ PMs need to demonstrate how they think about strategy, organizational challenges, and multi-product decisions. At senior levels, one detailed case study is often sufficient.
What format do interviewers prefer?+
Most interviewers prefer a live walkthrough over reading a document. Build your portfolio in a format that supports screen-sharing (Notion, website, or slides). Bring a PDF backup in case of technical issues. The content matters more than the format.
