Frequently Asked Questions

How many KPIs should a product team track?+
One north star metric, 3-5 primary KPIs, and 5-10 supporting KPIs. Primary KPIs are reviewed weekly. Supporting KPIs are reviewed monthly or when a primary KPI moves unexpectedly.
What is the difference between a KPI and a metric?+
A metric is any measurement. A KPI is a metric that directly indicates performance against a strategic goal. All KPIs are metrics, but not all metrics are KPIs. Revenue, activation rate, and retention are typically KPIs. Page load time and API error rate are important metrics but usually not KPIs unless performance is a strategic priority.
Who should own a KPI?+
A single person, typically the PM or analyst closest to the metric. Ownership means they are responsible for monitoring the number, investigating anomalies, and updating the definition. Ownership does not mean they are personally accountable for hitting the target.
How do I know if a KPI definition is precise enough?+
Give the definition to someone unfamiliar with it and ask them to reproduce the number. If they get the same result independently, the definition is precise enough. If they get a different number, the definition has gaps.
Should KPIs have both targets and stretch targets?+
Yes. The target represents the expected outcome based on current trajectory and planned work. The stretch target represents the best-case scenario. This is especially useful for teams using [OKRs](/glossary/okr-objectives-and-key-results), where stretch targets are built into the framework.
