Frequently Asked Questions

How detailed should release notes be?+
Match the detail to the impact. A major new feature deserves 2-3 sentences explaining what it does, who benefits, and how to access it. A minor bug fix needs one sentence. The goal is scannable, not exhaustive. Power users will read every line. Most users will scan the headings and read only what applies to them.
Should we publish release notes for every deployment?+
Every user-facing change should be documented. But you do not need to publish a separate entry for every deploy. Batch minor changes into weekly or biweekly notes. Ship a standalone entry for major features, breaking changes, or hotfixes that resolved customer-reported issues.
Who should write release notes?+
The product manager owns the content, but they should not write it alone. Pull descriptions from the engineers who built the features, then rewrite them in user-facing language. Have a support lead review before publishing. They know which changes will generate questions.
Where should we publish release notes?+
At minimum: an in-app changelog and a dedicated page on your website. For major releases, also send an email to active users and post a summary to your community Slack or forum. The [Stakeholder Communication Plan](/templates/stakeholder-communication-plan-template) can help you define which channels reach which audiences. For [release management](/glossary/release-management) at scale, consider tools like LaunchDarkly or GitHub Releases that integrate changelogs with your deployment pipeline.
How do release notes differ from a changelog?+
A changelog is a running technical log of every change, often auto-generated from commit messages or PR titles. Release notes are curated, user-facing summaries written for people who use the product, not people who built it. Both have value. The changelog serves as an internal audit trail. Release notes serve as external communication.
