Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from using the full RICE framework?+
RICE adds Confidence and Effort to Reach and Impact. This template focuses on getting the R and I estimates right because they are where most teams have the weakest data. Once you have solid reach and impact numbers, plug them into the [RICE Calculator](/tools/rice-calculator) for a complete score.
What if I have no data for a reach estimate?+
Start with what you know. If you have 10,000 MAU and the feature appears on the settings page, check settings page traffic in your analytics. If 15% of users visit settings monthly, your reach is roughly 1,500. When you truly have no data, flag the feature for a discovery spike before scoring it.
Should I use absolute numbers or percentages for reach?+
Use absolute numbers for scoring (they produce more meaningful combined scores) but track percentages alongside them for context. "2,000 users" is useful for prioritization. "16% of MAU" helps leadership understand relative scale.
How do I estimate impact without shipping the feature?+
Look at comparable features you have shipped before, competitor case studies, or industry benchmarks. If your last checkout optimization improved conversion by 12%, a similar optimization might have Medium to High impact. Be honest about uncertainty and add a Confidence score if needed.
How often should I update these estimates?+
Update reach estimates quarterly as your user base changes. Update impact estimates after each major feature launch, using actual results to calibrate your future predictions. Teams that track predicted vs actual impact improve their estimation accuracy by 30 to 50% within two quarters.
