Product Timeline Template for Product Planning

Use weekly windows instead of exact dates. Label milestones as "committed" (externally driven, non-negotiable) or "planned" (best estimate, may shift). Build 15-20% buffer into every work stream. Three to six months is the sweet spot. The first 4-6 weeks should be detailed (phases, owners, dependencies). The next 2-3 months should be directional (work streams and rough timing). Beyond 6 months, use a [Now/Next/Later roadmap](/roadmap-type/now-next-later-roadmap) or a strategy-level view instead of a timeline.

The tool matters less than the discipline. Google Sheets works for most teams. Linear, Jira, and Notion all have timeline views. Dedicated tools like Productboard, Aha!, or Roadmunk offer richer visuals. Pick whatever your team will actually update weekly. A timeline in a tool nobody opens is worse than a timeline on a whiteboard that the team gathers around every Monday.

Add a row per team and show dependencies as arrows or notes. The key is making cross-team handoffs explicit: "Work Stream B cannot start Phase 2 until Work Stream A delivers the API." Hold a weekly sync with all work stream owners to review status and surface blockers early.
