Product Requirements Checklist for PMs

No. Scale the checklist to the scope. A copy change does not need a security review or beta test. But be deliberate about what you skip. The most common post-launch regrets come from items that "seemed unnecessary" until they were not. A good rule: if the feature touches user data, payments, or core workflows, do not skip any items.

The PM owns the checklist as a whole, but individual items have specific owners. The PM does not write the technical spec or run the QA pass. They ensure those items are assigned, tracked, and completed. Think of the PM as the project coordinator, not the person who checks every box personally.

A PRD describes what you are building and why. This checklist tracks whether every supporting artifact (the PRD itself, the designs, the test plan, the rollout strategy) actually exists and is approved. The PRD is one item on this checklist, not a replacement for it.

Push back with risk framing. "We can skip beta testing. The risk is that we find bugs in production that affect 4,000 users instead of 10 beta testers. Here is what happened last time we skipped beta." Quantifying the downside of cutting corners is more effective than saying "best practice says we should."

Use it for any feature that involves multiple teams, external dependencies, or user-facing changes. Internal tooling improvements, minor bug fixes, and config changes can use a lighter process. The checklist is most valuable for launches where a missed item creates real downstream cost.
