Frequently Asked Questions

How are product principles different from company values?+
Company values (integrity, collaboration, customer focus) apply to everyone in the organization and govern behavior. Product principles apply specifically to product decisions and govern trade-offs. Company values tell you how to act. Product principles tell you what to build and how to prioritize. Both matter, but they serve different functions.
Who should define product principles?+
The product leadership team (PM lead, Eng Lead, Design Lead) should facilitate the workshop, but the principles should reflect input from the full product team. Senior ICs (staff engineers, senior designers) often have the deepest intuition for the trade-offs the team faces. Customer-facing stakeholders (CS leads, sales engineers) bring a perspective that pure product teams often miss. For aligning stakeholders around principles, the [Stakeholder Management Handbook](/stakeholder-guide) covers facilitation techniques.
What if two principles conflict?+
They will, and that is by design. When two principles point in opposite directions, the team discusses which principle takes priority in this specific context. The conflict surfaces a genuine trade-off that needs human judgment. If two principles always conflict, one of them needs to be revised or removed.
How do I know if our principles are working?+
Track three signals. First, are people citing principles in PRDs and design critiques? If no one references them, they are not working. Second, are new decisions faster because the principles resolve ambiguity? Third, is the Application Log growing? If you cannot find examples of principles being applied in real decisions, they are decorative, not functional.
Can principles change over time?+
Yes, and they should. As your product matures, your market evolves, and your team grows, the trade-offs you face will change. A startup principle like "Ship fast, fix later" may evolve into "Earn complexity" as the product matures and the cost of mistakes increases. Review principles annually. ---
