What This Template Is For

You shipped the feature. The launch announcement went out. The team wants to move on to the next project. But the most dangerous period is the 2-4 weeks right after launch, when real users hit edge cases your test suite missed, support tickets reveal confused workflows, and performance degrades under actual load patterns.

Most teams skip this stabilization window entirely. They launch, celebrate, and immediately start the next sprint. Two months later, the feature has a quiet reputation problem: users tried it, hit friction, and stopped using it. Nobody noticed because nobody was watching.

This checklist structures the stabilization period into daily, weekly, and milestone-based activities. It covers monitoring, bug triage, user feedback loops, performance baselines, and the criteria for declaring a feature stable. Use it for any significant launch: new features, platform migrations, pricing changes, or major redesigns.

When to Use This Template

  • After any feature launch that touches more than 100 users. Small internal tools can skip this. Anything customer-facing needs it.
  • After a platform migration or infrastructure change. Even if nothing looks different to users, the underlying system behavior has changed.
  • After a pricing or packaging change. Revenue impact takes days to surface. Churn signals take weeks.
  • After a major redesign. Users who learned the old patterns will struggle with new ones. Watch for abandonment spikes.

How to Use This Template

  1. Copy this checklist into your project management tool on launch day.
  2. Assign one person as the Stabilization Owner. This is usually the PM, but it can be an engineering lead. The point is that someone owns the 2-4 week window.
  3. Complete the Day 1 section on launch day itself. Pre-populate the monitoring dashboards and alert thresholds.
  4. Run through the daily checklist each morning for the first week. After Week 1, switch to the weekly cadence.
  5. Hit the graduation criteria before declaring the feature stable and moving the team to the next project.

Graduation Criteria

A feature is considered stable when ALL of the following are true. Do not move the team to the next project until these are met.

  • Zero open P0 or P1 bugs for 7 consecutive days
  • Error rate at or below pre-launch baseline for 7 consecutive days
  • Latency at or below pre-launch baseline for 7 consecutive days
  • Support ticket volume for this feature is declining or flat for 2 consecutive weeks
  • Adoption rate meets or exceeds the target set in the launch brief
  • Feature flag removed or set to 100% (no partial rollout lingering)
  • Monitoring alerts tuned to long-term thresholds (not temporary launch thresholds)
  • Runbook or troubleshooting guide published for on-call engineers

Scenario: A B2B SaaS company launched a new dashboard for enterprise customers. The launch went smoothly on Day 1, with no errors and positive Slack messages from the sales team.

What happened during stabilization:

  1. Day 3: Support tickets revealed that customers with 50,000+ data points saw 8-second load times. The team had only tested with accounts under 10,000 data points. P1 bug logged, query optimization shipped by Day 5.
  2. Week 1 summary: Adoption was 34% (target was 25%), but completion rate was only 41%. Session recordings showed users clicking the export button, getting confused by the format options, and abandoning. A tooltip and default format selection shipped in Week 2.

Tips for Success

  • Assign one owner. Shared ownership means nobody checks the dashboard on Friday afternoon. One person holds the pager.
  • Set concrete thresholds before launch. "Monitor performance" is not a plan. "p95 latency under 400ms, error rate under 0.5%" is a plan. Use the launch metrics template to define these upfront.
  • Time-box the stabilization window. Two weeks is right for most features. Four weeks for platform changes or migrations. Without a deadline, stabilization drags on indefinitely.
  • Protect the team from new work. The biggest risk to stabilization is starting the next sprint before the current launch is stable. Block new feature work during the stabilization window.
  • Use your RICE scores to prioritize stabilization bugs alongside new feature requests. A P1 stabilization bug almost always scores higher than a speculative new feature.

Common Mistakes

  • Declaring victory on launch day. Day 1 metrics reflect early adopters and internal testing, not real-world usage. Wait for Week 2 data before celebrating.
  • Treating all bugs equally. A cosmetic alignment issue is not the same as a data corruption bug. Use the P0/P1/P2 triage in this checklist to focus effort where it matters.
  • Ignoring qualitative signals. Metrics tell you what is happening. Support tickets and session recordings tell you why. Read both.
  • Removing feature flags too early. Keep the kill switch available until graduation criteria are met. The cost of maintaining a feature flag for two extra weeks is negligible compared to the cost of a broken rollback.
  • Skipping the post-launch review. Stabilization catches the immediate fires. The post-launch retrospective captures the process improvements that prevent fires next time.

Who should own stabilization?+
The PM who owns the feature. They have the context on user expectations, the relationships with support and sales, and the authority to prioritize bug fixes over new work. For infrastructure launches, the engineering lead may be a better fit.

This checklist is an operational runbook for the 2-4 weeks after launch. You use it every day. What if we need to roll back during stabilization?+
That is exactly why the rollback plan is the first item in this checklist. If a P0 bug cannot be fixed within 24 hours, roll back. A delayed feature is better than a broken feature. Document the rollback reason, fix the root cause, and re-launch when ready.
Can we start new sprint work during stabilization?+
