Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a POC last?+
Two to four weeks for most SaaS products. One week is too short to get meaningful usage data. Six weeks or more usually signals unclear scope, lack of customer engagement, or an attempt to get extended free access.
What if the customer wants a POC with no success criteria?+
Push back professionally. Offer to co-create criteria based on their goals. If they refuse, they are likely using the "POC" as a free trial or a stalling tactic. Consider whether the deal is real before investing SE time.
Should we charge for the POC?+
For deals under $50K ARR, a free POC is standard. For deals over $100K, consider charging a nominal fee ($5K-10K) that gets credited toward the contract. Paid POCs filter out tire-kickers and signal real buying intent.
How do I handle a POC where we lose to a competitor?+
Debrief with the customer. Ask specifically which criteria the competitor scored higher on and why. Document the loss in your [win-loss analysis](/templates/win-loss-analysis-template). Feed product gaps back to the roadmap using the [RICE framework](/frameworks/rice-framework) for prioritization. ---
