Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from a team health check?+
A [team health check](/templates/team-health-check-template) measures team dynamics and morale (psychological safety, collaboration, energy). A maturity model measures organizational capabilities and processes. Both are useful. Health checks should happen quarterly. Maturity assessments should happen every 6 months.
Who should lead the maturity assessment?+
The VP of Product or Head of Product Ops. They have the cross-team visibility to assess all pillars accurately and the authority to drive improvement initiatives. If you do not have a VP of Product, a senior PM lead can facilitate, but the results should be presented to leadership.
What if different product teams within the same organization score differently?+
That is normal and expected. A mature platform team and a scrappy new product team will have different maturity profiles. Score each team separately, then aggregate at the org level. Use the per-team scores to identify where to share best practices across teams.
How long does the assessment take?+
Individual scoring takes 30-60 minutes per person. The consensus meeting takes 90 minutes. Building the improvement plan takes 2-3 hours. Total elapsed time: about half a day for the core assessment team. ---
