Frequently Asked Questions
How many respondents do I need for a reliable Kano analysis?+
A minimum of 20 respondents per user segment gives you directionally useful results. For higher confidence, aim for 40 to 50. If a feature's category is split evenly across respondents, you need more data or the feature may genuinely be segment-dependent.
Can I use Kano analysis alongside RICE scoring?+
Yes, and it is a strong combination. Use Kano to classify features by type, then apply [RICE scoring](/frameworks/rice-framework) within each category to determine build order. Must-Be features with high RICE scores ship first.
What does a "Questionable" result mean?+
A Questionable result means the respondent's answers are contradictory (for example, they like the feature being present AND like it being absent). This usually indicates the question was confusing. Rephrase the feature description and re-survey those respondents.
How do I handle features that split across two categories?+
If a feature gets similar counts for two categories (for example, 20 Performance and 18 Attractive), it is likely transitioning between categories or varies by user segment. Segment your data by persona or plan tier to see if the split resolves.
How often should I re-run Kano analysis?+
At least once per year for your core product, and whenever you enter a new market segment. Features migrate from Attractive to Performance to Must-Be as markets mature. What delights users today becomes an expectation within 12 to 18 months.
