Frequently Asked Questions
How is impact mapping different from a feature roadmap?+
A feature roadmap lists what you will build. An impact map explains why you are building it and for whom. Impact maps add the goal and behavior-change layers that feature roadmaps typically lack. Use the impact map to generate the roadmap, not the other way around.
How many actors should an impact map have?+
Three to five for a focused goal. More than seven becomes unwieldy. If you have too many actors, your goal may be too broad. Narrow the goal and re-map.
Can I use impact mapping with Agile/Scrum?+
Yes. The impact map feeds your product backlog. Each deliverable becomes one or more user stories. The impact provides the "so that" in the user story format ("As a [actor], I want [deliverable] so that [impact]"). This is how you ensure every sprint item connects to a business goal.
What if a deliverable serves multiple impacts?+
Document it under the primary impact and cross-reference it. When prioritizing, count it once. In the visual map format, you can draw lines from a single deliverable to multiple impacts. ---
