Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a flywheel and a funnel?+
A funnel is linear: awareness leads to consideration leads to purchase. Each step loses people. A flywheel is circular: each output feeds back into the system. Funnels require constant top-of-funnel investment to maintain growth. Flywheels generate their own momentum over time. The [Product-Led Growth Handbook](/plg-guide) covers how PLG companies replace funnels with flywheel models.
How do I know if my flywheel is working?+
Measure the K-factor (viral coefficient) and the time per revolution. If the K-factor is above 0.3, each user is generating meaningful organic growth. If the time per revolution is decreasing over time, the flywheel is accelerating. If both metrics are flat or declining, the flywheel has too much friction.
Can a sales-led company have a flywheel?+
Yes. The flywheel stages are different. A sales-led flywheel might be: marketing generates demand, sales closes deals, customer success drives adoption, adoption generates case studies and referrals, referrals lower acquisition cost. HubSpot built their flywheel model explicitly for a sales-led motion. The key is that the output of one stage feeds the input of another.
How many stages should a flywheel have?+
Three to five stages. Fewer than three and it is too simple to be useful. More than five and it becomes too complex to communicate or measure. Each stage should represent a distinct, measurable transition in the customer journey.
What is the most common flywheel mistake?+
Investing in acquisition (Stage 1) while ignoring activation (Stage 2). If activation is a bottleneck, more sign-ups just mean more people who never experience value. Fix the bottleneck before increasing input volume. The [Product Analytics Handbook](/analytics-guide) covers how to identify and measure bottlenecks with funnel analysis. ---
