Frequently Asked Questions
How is an executive dashboard different from a team dashboard?+
Scope and audience. Team dashboards track 5-10 metrics the team can directly influence, refreshed daily, used in sprint planning. Executive dashboards track 8-12 metrics across the business, refreshed weekly, used in resource allocation and strategy decisions. The team dashboard includes leading indicators like "onboarding step 2 completion rate." The executive dashboard includes the lagging outcome: "[activation rate](/metrics/activation-rate)." Both are necessary. They serve different decision-makers. For the team-level version, see the [KPI Dashboard Template](/templates/kpi-dashboard-template).
Should I include competitor data on the executive dashboard?+
Only if you have reliable, regularly updated competitive data. Stale competitor numbers are worse than no competitor numbers because they create a false sense of market awareness. If you have access to analyst reports (Gartner, G2) or competitive intelligence platforms (Klue, Crayon) with fresh data, include 1-2 benchmark comparisons. Otherwise, cover competitive context in the monthly exec review presentation, not the dashboard.
What tool should I use for executive dashboards?+
The tool matters less than the data integration. Executives want one screen, not five tools. Looker and Tableau handle multi-source data well (product analytics + revenue + support). Amplitude and Mixpanel are strong for product metrics but weak for financial data. Metabase is the best open-source option. The key requirements: can it pull from all your data sources, does it support scheduled email snapshots, and can the executive actually navigate it without help? The [PM Tool Picker](/tools/pm-tool-picker) can help evaluate dashboard tools.
How do I get buy-in from executives to actually use the dashboard?+
Three tactics. First, make it the first slide in every exec meeting. If the dashboard is the default view for every strategic discussion, it becomes the shared language. Second, send a weekly automated email snapshot. Executives who will not open Looker will read an email with 8 numbers. Third, connect every dashboard metric to a specific executive's OKR. If the CEO's OKR includes NRR > 110%, NRR on the dashboard is personally relevant, not abstract.
How often should dashboard targets change?+
Reset targets quarterly. Annual targets feel too distant for weekly monitoring. Quarterly targets create urgency and allow recalibration based on actual performance. When resetting, review whether the metric itself still belongs on the dashboard, not just the target. A metric that was critical during a product launch may be irrelevant once the product is mature. The [glossary entry on OKRs](/glossary/okr-objectives-and-key-results) covers the relationship between dashboard targets and quarterly goal-setting. ---
