Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should enablement start before a launch?+
Start 3-4 weeks before launch for major features. This allows 1 week to draft content, 1 week for review and iteration, and 1 week for training delivery and certification. For minor launches, 1-2 weeks is sufficient. Never start the week of launch.
Who owns enablement: product, product marketing, or enablement?+
The PM provides the source material (feature details, positioning, customer evidence). PMM translates it into sales-ready content. If a dedicated enablement team exists, they own training delivery and certification. In most startups, PMM or the PM handles all three. The key is that one person owns the timeline.
What if the team is not certified by launch day?+
Enforce the policy. Uncertified reps shadow certified reps on their first 3-5 deals. Uncertified support agents escalate all tickets about the new feature to Tier 2. This creates natural pressure to get certified quickly without delaying the launch for customers who already want the feature.
How do you enable remote and distributed teams?+
Record all live training sessions. Create async alternatives for every synchronous session: video walkthroughs, written guides, and self-paced quizzes. Use different time-zone-friendly session times and post recordings within 24 hours. The certification process should be completable asynchronously.
How do you know if enablement worked?+
Track three signals in the first 30 days: support ticket volume for the new feature (should be manageable), sales demo inclusion rate (should be high), and repeat question rate (should be low). If support is overwhelmed with basic questions, the training missed something. If sales is not demoing the feature, they are not confident in it. Both are enablement failures that need immediate fixes.
