How many emails should a SaaS product send?+
There is no universal number, but most mature SaaS products send 8-15 distinct email types: 3-5 transactional (account actions, billing), 3-5 lifecycle (onboarding, trial conversion, renewal), and 2-5 engagement (usage summaries, feature updates). Start with the emails that directly support [user onboarding](/glossary/activation-rate) and billing, then add engagement emails based on data. Every email should have a clear purpose. If you cannot articulate why a user benefits from receiving it, do not send it.
Should transactional emails include marketing content?+
Keep transactional emails focused on the transaction. Adding marketing banners to password resets or billing receipts reduces trust and can cause deliverability issues (email providers may reclassify them as promotional). Focus on layout breaking (stacked columns, button sizing) and image rendering (missing alt text, oversized images). Test with real data, not placeholder tokens, to catch edge cases with long names or missing personalization data.

For B2B SaaS, Tuesday through Thursday between 9-11am in the recipient's local timezone performs best for lifecycle and engagement emails. Transactional emails should send immediately (they are triggered by user actions, so timing is inherent).
