Frequently Asked Questions
Which DORA metrics should we start with?+
Start with deployment frequency and lead time for changes. These are the easiest to measure (your CI/CD system likely tracks them already) and the most actionable. Add change failure rate and MTTR once you have incident tracking in place. See the [Product Analytics Handbook](/analytics-guide) for guidance on building measurement systems incrementally.
How do we measure cycle time if our tooling does not track it automatically?+
Most project management tools (Jira, Linear, Shortcut) track when items move between columns. Cycle time is the difference between when an item enters "In Progress" and when it moves to "Done." If your tool does not calculate this, export the transition history and compute it in a spreadsheet. Even manual tracking is better than no tracking.
Should we compare metrics across teams?+
Be cautious. Different teams work on different types of problems with different codebases and different tech stacks. A platform team's cycle time is not comparable to a frontend team's. Compare teams against their own baselines and improvement trajectories, not against each other. Use DORA benchmarks for external comparison if needed.
How often should we update the dashboard?+
Weekly is the right cadence for most teams. Daily is too noisy (individual items completing or not). Monthly is too slow to catch trends. Update on the same day each week (e.g., Monday morning) and review during the weekly team sync.
