Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cynefin just another 2x2 matrix?+
No. Cynefin is a sense-making framework with five domains, not four quadrants. The domains are not symmetric. The boundary between Complex and Chaotic is particularly important because falling from Complex into Chaotic (a "cliff edge" in Cynefin) requires a fundamentally different response. The fifth domain (Disorder) in the center is unique to Cynefin.
How do I know if something is Complicated or Complex?+
Ask: "If we brought in the world's best expert, could they tell us the right answer before we act?" If yes, it is Complicated. If even experts can only hypothesize and would need to experiment to find out, it is Complex. Market entry, cultural change, and novel technology are almost always Complex.
Can the same initiative span multiple domains?+
Yes. A product launch might have Clear elements (deployment checklist), Complicated elements (pricing analysis), and Complex elements (market positioning). Break the initiative into component parts and classify each separately.
How often should I re-classify?+
Revisit classifications at least quarterly. Domains shift. An initiative that was Complex six months ago may have revealed enough patterns to be Complicated now. A Clear process might have broken down into Chaos due to changing conditions. ---
