How is the Business Model Canvas different from a Lean Canvas?+
The Lean Canvas (by Ash Maurya) replaces Key Partners, Key Activities, Key Resources, and Customer Relationships with Problem, Solution, Key Metrics, and Unfair Advantage. The Lean Canvas is better suited for early-stage startups validating a brand-new idea. The BMC is better for established products or companies where partnerships and infrastructure are significant.
Should I fill this out for my own product or for a competitor?+
Both. Complete one for your product first, then use the same framework to map 1-2 key competitors. Comparing canvases side by side reveals strategic differences that feature comparisons miss.
How do I handle a marketplace or platform business model?+
Create two value propositions and two customer segments: one for each side of the marketplace (e.g., buyers and sellers). Map the interactions between them. The revenue and cost structures should reflect both sides.
What if I do not know some of the answers?+
That is the point. Blank cells or cells marked "assumption" are the most valuable output. They tell you what to research or test next. ---
