Frequently Asked Questions

How many participants should a closed beta have?+
15-30 participants is the standard range for a closed beta. Fewer than 10 and you risk insufficient signal. More than 50 and you lose the ability to have meaningful 1:1 conversations with participants. The goal is enough diversity to surface major issues, not a statistically significant sample. For open betas focused on scale testing, target 100-500 participants.
How long should a beta run?+
Most feature betas run 2-4 weeks. Shorter than 2 weeks and participants do not have time to integrate the feature into their real workflow. Longer than 6 weeks and feedback fatigue sets in. For new products (not features), 6-8 weeks allows for more iteration cycles.
What incentives should I offer beta participants?+
Match the incentive to the ask. For a 2-week feature beta with biweekly feedback, early access is often enough. For a 6-week product beta requiring weekly check-ins, offer tangible value: extended free plan, permanent discount, public recognition, or swag. The best incentive is influence. Tell participants their feedback will shape the final product, and show them the changes you make based on their input.
What if the beta fails to meet graduation criteria?+
Extend the beta by 1-2 weeks and fix the blockers. Communicate the extension honestly to participants. If the criteria cannot be met within a reasonable extension, consider whether the feature should ship at all. A beta that reveals fundamental problems is a success. It prevented a bad launch.
Should I charge for beta access?+
For features added to an existing paid product, no. Customers are already paying and you are asking for their time. For new standalone products, a discounted beta price (50-75% off) signals value and attracts serious users rather than curiosity browsers. Paid beta participants provide higher-quality feedback because they have skin in the game.
