When should I conduct an AI ethics review?+
Before launching any AI-powered feature, during significant model changes, when expanding to new user populations, and at regular intervals (at least annually) for AI features already in production. Also conduct a review when users report AI-related harms.
Who should participate in the ethics review?+
At minimum: the product manager, an engineer familiar with the AI implementation, a legal representative, and someone who represents user interests (UX researcher, customer advocate). For high-impact features, include leadership and external advisors.
How long should an ethics review take?+
For low-impact features: 2-4 hours of preparation plus a 1-hour review meeting. For high-impact features: 1-2 weeks of preparation including bias testing and data analysis, plus a 2-hour review meeting. The preparation is where the real work happens.
What if the review identifies risks we cannot fully mitigate?+
Document the residual risks, quantify them where possible, and have a senior leader explicitly accept them. Implement monitoring to detect if residual risks materialize. Define trigger conditions that would force a re-review or product change. ---
